The Museum Of Islamic Arts
Doha, Quatar (1997)
The new Museum of Islamic Arts in Doha, Qatar is designed as a total fusion of architecture, exhibition space, environmental technology,
electronic communications, and the surrounding context. Confirming SITE's belief that architecture should reflect the integrated systems
governing nature, this project is the result of an unusually close collaboration of architects, artists, and technicians focused on
environmental design. The architectural imagery is a response to sources associated with Islamic culture, the topography of rolling sand,
nautical commerce, and regional vegetation. The museum is intended to suggest a vast desert landscape, punctuated with architectural
features and an occasional oasis of water and greenery. The interior spaces include the latest video and computer technology to help
explain the artifacts on display. Most of the exhibits are designed as an intrinsic part of the wall system.
