Shake Shack

Union Square Hospitality Group - 2004

The ‘menu-as-building’ image of this kiosk restaurant is based on American hamburger stands of the 1950’s; but, in this case, located in perverse juxtaposition with one of Manhattan’s most famous 19th Century parks. In addition to celebrating the Shack’s pop culture origins, this corrugated metal eatery is designed to gracefully integrate with its heavily vegetated environment and visually reflect the triangular, rib-like facade of Daniel Burnham’s nearby Flatiron Building.
