Laurie Mallet House
Private home in Greenwich Village - 1985
Designed for the president of a prominent fashion company and her family in Greenwich Village, this project called for the preservation and renovation of an 1820's Greek revival house. In order to increase space for children’s bedrooms, an area under the back yard is excavated, so that both garden and patio are raised to form a roof over this addition. The interior is based on a layering of narrative ideas, drawn from the history of the building, existing artifacts found inside and the personal biography of the owner. To add a metaphysical dimension, a series of ghost-like architectural and household artifacts are partially buried in the walls at various degrees of exposure. The scale, purpose and psychological associations within different rooms determined the choice and positioning of these surreal elements.
